Jeremy Beggs

  • Edinburgh Castle 681 Sydney Road Brunswick 3056 Australia (map)

Jeremy Beggs is Western Victorian-based troubadour with Americana leanings. He is the heart-on-his-sleeve type songwriter, telling everyday stories from his perspective as a husband, father and teacher.  Jeremy honors the struggle, resilience and joy of the mundane in his songs, a cathartic communion to share with all.  His voice is authoritative but accessible, equally comfortable with just his guitar or supported by his full band.

Jeremy has been singing and playing music since the age of five and loves exploring the creative process.  After spending many years playing and writing with fellow Western Victorian based band The Suffringtons, 2020 unexpectedly provided Jeremy with an opportunity to explore a solo career.  Inspired by artists such as Drew Holcomb, Jordie Lane, Jason Isbell and Whiskeytown, Jeremy headed to the studio to record his debut EP Layered Signs in 2021.

Jeremy says that Layered Signs explores “...the complex relationships we have with our world from both an individual and global perspective. The noise occurring in our world has been deafening during this time of upheaval, and it has been so hard to filter out the truth. We are exhausted, we are tired, we are confused. So all we can do is find the things that help keep us grounded and connected, because all that remains is now.”

2022 saw Jeremy head to the Tamworth Country Music Festival resulting in a chance meeting with Melbourne-based, New Zealand songwriter Matt Joe Gow.  The outcome was Jeremy becoming a temporary member of Matt’s band "The Dead Leaves” for his major festival show and the two collaborating on the recent release “Hurtful Ways”.

Built on sparkling acoustic and shimmering electric guitars, Hammond organ and a wonderful sense of space and grace, the song taps into feelings of regret and inadequacies one faces as we navigate through relationships. Combined with growing societal expectations it can be hard to shake old habits that get in the way. Featuring enchanting melodies, authentic storytelling and Jeremy's gentle & earthy voice, the song is a superb example of alt-country balladry, where heartache and regret hold away.

For Jeremy, 'Hurtful Ways' was written after a period of both celebration and challenge as he searches for the never-ending balance between career and family. “My family always comes first but the reality is as a musician, sometimes we are taken away from the ones we love,” he says. “I’m constantly trying to find and keep that balance but unfortunately that sometimes tilts too far one way and requires recalibration.”

Of his songwriting collaboration with Matt, Jeremy says, "I feel so fortunate to have met Matt and am grateful for all the things I have learnt from him so far. Before being thrust up on stage with Matt & The Dead Leaves in Tamworth last year, my music was really just floating around like a dream. Sharing the stage and watching and meeting wonderful artists made me really understand what this journey is all about."

'Hurtful Ways' was produced by Matt Joe Gow and Andrew Pollock at The Woodshed, with additional engineer support provided by Chris Elliott. The music captures Jeremy's new Americana sound, enhancing and building on the strength of his personal storytelling.

Jeremy has performed at festivals such as Hide & Seek, Cresfest and Tamworth Country Music Festival and opened for a number of acts including Matt Joe Gow and Things Of Stone And Wood.
