New to the folk music scene of Victoria, Millgrove based ‘Tall Timber’ was formed in the middle of Melbourne’s 2020-2021 lock down as duo members Maxine Sutcliffe and Stephen Lebsanft, unable to play in their usual musical commitments, together performed live-streamed gigs and recorded music at home. Now in 2022, riding the wave of Victoria’s re-energised music scene, they’re out to share with music lovers their individual sound and captivating performance style, providing some well-needed, long-overdue and much-deserved good times and tunes.
Tall Timber carefully arrange and perform well selected vintage and modern covers as well as original music in an interesting and natural blend of wooden and brass sounds with their main format as a guitar, trombone and vocal combination. Originally from Queensland, where they met almost a decade ago while studying at at the Conservatorium in Brisbane, the duo took their name and musical inspiration from the tall, ancient trees in the forests of Victoria as well as the spirit and resilience of the residents in their neighbouring timber towns. They hope to express through their performances the mystery and natural beauty of the forests and the vitality and love of life of the people.
